Speaking of sunny — we’ll be leaving for Bequia next week. We’re exploring some ventures there, as well getting some much needed decompression time.

It looks like we’ll be starting work a on little project called Kuppa Lukka — to be released hopefully by May 1st. More on that later.…..

So I have never done this before, no not type or put my words on paper, sorry web paper, I mean blogged. I used to keep a written journal in high school and college which turned into an architectural sketch book during my masters so this shouldn’t be too new to me, but it is. So here it goes!

I have been watching the Olympics, not necessarily because I am a huge patriot but because I enjoy seeing people achieve that final prize for working hard. It is something I hope to achieve in my career as an architect. Yes, I have seen my designs built and brought to fruition but to me that is not what I am talking about. What I want to achieve, no, yes, achieve is knowledge. Not the knowledge you gain in school from hours of classes and studios, but the knowledge you gather from the close relationship you have with a mentor. A person in your profession who wants to see what they have learned be passed on and expanded upon. Yes, this is what I want. I look forward to it.

I look forward to being humble, pensive, a sponge. I look forward to gathering and learning the inside world of architecture. I yearn for the days when I get lost in my thoughts day dreaming about a current project. Don’t get me wrong, I day dream architecture, I walk around NYC staring up walking into passerbys. Let me say, when you are an architect and currently in my predicament, NYC makes it all better.

NYC is a world onto its own. A place where no matter how great or bad things are, the future still seems within reach and full of promise. This is why at this time, in this city, I am trying something new, like blogging and starting our own business. Most people think we are a little crazy for trying this in NYC but I have to say the saying is true, “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere”.

So with that thought, thank you and I look forward to trying this again.

Please let me know what you think!

Moving into a design career after spending the last ten years in a job that required mostly left brain thinking has been quite an adventure. A massive, headache inducing adventure. My right brain hasn’t exactly had to do a lot of heavy lifting during this period — so needless to say I’m still dusting the cobwebs off. But I think it’s finally starting to shake off some of the rust. (This site, for instance — doesn’t look half bad, does it?)

Point being, I don’t think I ever really truly appreciated the hard work that goes into creating something aesthetically pleasing to the senses — until I started this whole process of reinventing myself a year ago. It’s amazing how difficult it is!

So, to all you artistic types out there.…MAD respect. Seriously.

Jamie

PS. I figure this design thing will work out nicely, in the long run. In the meantime, don’t be surprised if you see me in line at the food bank. I have heard that being creative also means having to be poor for a while. As it turns out, they’re right.
